چکیده
Myotonic Dystrophy is an autosomally dominant inherited disease affecting individuals of all ages. It’s prevalence among Caucasians is estimated at 35 per 100,000 individuals in the population. (1) The age of onset allows for specific classification of the disease into one of four categories: congenital, which appears at birth; juvenile, appearing up through teenage years; adult, symptoms start in the late twenties to early forties; and late onset, where patients present after their forties. The severity of the disease has been found to be directly related to the age of onset, with congenital myotonic dystrophy being the most severe.

Almost 100 years ago, Steinert (1909), Batten and Gibb (1909), independently described Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) that is now recognized as the most common form of muscular dystrophies in adults and the second most common type of muscular dystrophy after Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, affecting 1 in 8000 individuals globally (Harper, 1989). DM1 is a genetic disorder, which is inherited in an...

Objectives: Myotonic Dystrophy type I (DM1) is a dominantly inherited disorder with a multisystemic pattern affecting skeletal muscle, heart, eye, endocrine and central nervous system. DM1 is associated with the expansion and instability of CTG repeat in the 3chr('39') untranslated region of the myotonic dystrophy protein kinase (DMPK) gene located on chromosome 19q13.3. The aim of this study w...

Myotonic dystrophy (dystrophia myotonica, DM) is the most frequently inherited neuromuscular disease of adult life. DM is a multisystem disease with major cardiac involvement. Core features of myotonic dystrophy are myotonia, muscle weakness, cataract, and cardiac conduction abnormalities. Classical DM (first described by Steinert and called Steinert’s disease or DM1) has been identified as an ...

DM (myotonic dystrophy) is a dominantly inherited genetic disorder that is the most common cause of muscular dystrophy in adults affecting 1 in 8500 individuals worldwide. Different microsatellite expansions in two loci cause different forms of the disease that share similar features: DM1 (DM type 1) is caused by a tri- (CTG) nucleotide expansion within the DMPK (dystrophia myotonica protein ki...

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 is the commonest neuromuscular disease affecting adults. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, and is linked to a dynamic expansion of a CTG triplet repeat localised to chromosome 19q13.3. The phenotype can be divided into four main groups: mild, juvenile, classical, and congenital. The most severe form of the condition is observed in congenitally affected i...
